Session Description

One-size-fits-all doesn’t work in fitness—especially when working with diverse populations across age groups and ability levels. This session explores how to thoughtfully adapt movement modalities like yoga and general fitness classes to meet the needs of people with varying physical, sensory, and cognitive needs.

We’ll look at how to design accessible, inclusive classes for youth with sensory processing challenges, adults with intellectual disabilities, and older adults with mobility limitations or dementia. You’ll also learn how to use thoughtful, inclusive language—avoiding terms that may unintentionally cause harm or create distance—so participants feel respected, safe, and seen.

Through real-world examples and practical tools, you’ll learn how to stay adaptable as a coach while maintaining class structure, support self-regulation, and communicate effectively with caregivers.

Expect scenario-based discussion, thoughtful problem-solving, and uplifting stories that showcase the power of inclusive movement to build connection, confidence, and community—across every generation.

Topics include:

  • Adapting yoga and fitness classes for seated, sensory-sensitive, or neurodiverse participants
  • Strategies for supporting autonomy, regulation, and emotional safety
  • Using inclusive language to foster trust, comfort, and belonging
  • Effective communication with caregivers and support staff
  • Building rapport and creating a sense of belonging in mixed-ability spaces
  • Being responsive in the moment while maintaining class flow
